Marine Conservation Biology Symposium Marine Conservation Biology Institute, WA Conduct a symposium on marine con- servation biology on June 6-9, 1997 at the University of Victoria in British Columbia and compile scientific papers presented at the symposium in a book format to stimulate interest in marine conservation issues. Outside funds: $98,000. Oceanographic Environmental Monitoring-II Scientific Environmental Research Foundation, VA Utilize U.S. Navy underwater acoustic listening equipment in Coos Bay, Oregon to conduct civilian research and monitoring of marine mammals and other ocean fishery resources. NFWF: $IOO,OOO; outside funds: $400,000. Horselick Creek Restoration-III USDA Forest Service, Daniel Boone National Forest, KY Third year of support to reduce sedi- mentation in the Horselick Creek water- shed by block- ing off-high- way vehicles from unau- thorized roads. Project will improve water quality and habitat for native fish and two endangered mussel species. NFWF: $15,000; out- side funds: $31,500. Marine Mammals and Contaminants National Fish and WlldliJe Foundation, DC Convene a series of meetings and pre- pare reports on contaminants in the marine environment, the effects of the contaminants on marine mam- mals, and the potential value of marine mammals as indicators of the health of coastal marine ecosystems. NFWF: $50,000. Palau Coral Reef Conservation The Nature Conservancy, VA Develop management plans, train conservation officers, and produce educational materials to protect coral reef resources within Kayangel and Ngarchelong in northern Palau in conjunction with the governments of these two states. NFWF: $21,492; out- side funds: $25,000. Pine Gulch Creek Watershed Enhancement National Par~ Service, CA Reduce summer agricultural pumping pressures in Pine Gulch Creek by con- structing four off-stream water storage ponds in cooperation with private landowners. This will improve exist- ing steelhead and potential coho habi- tat. NFWF: $24,000; outside funds: $48,000. Mississippi River Habitat Restoration American Rivers, Inc., DC Modify training structures (dams, levees, and revetments) on the upper Mississippi River in cooperation with the Army Corp of Engineers and navi- gation and agricultural interests to increase aquatic habitat diversity and facilitate navigation. NFWF: $16,400; outside funds: $41,800. Portuguese Creek Deflector USDA Forest Service, Sierra National Forest, CA Install a single-wing deflec- tor in the West Fork of California's Portuguese Creek to decrease sedi- mentation and improve habitat for Lahontan cut- throat trout. NFWF: $2,000; out- side funds: $2,000. Montana Rivers Project National Center Jor Appropriate Technology, MT Increase the efficiency of irrigation systems in Montana in cooperation with local irrigators in order to con- serve water, decrease farm operating costs, and improve water quality and quantity for bull trout, cutthroat trout, and Arctic grayling. NFWF: $60,000; outside funds: $121,790. Re- River the Little Tallahatchie USDA Forest Service, Holly Springs National Forest, MS Work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a massive I effort to restore 23 miles of the ! Little Tallahatchie River by diverting : flows from two canals into the origi- ! nal channel. Project will develop : management plans to restore the ! river's ecological health. NFWF: : $32,000; outside funds: $32,000. 1 I I I L_____________________ North Carolina Bluefin Tuna Economic Assessment American SporifishingAssociation, VA Conduct a socio-economic study of the recreational charter/private boat fishery for Atlantic bluefin tuna off the coast of North Carolina to help federal and state agencies effectively manage the fishery. NFWF: $25,000; outside funds: $25,000. Restore Our Southern Rivers-IV Tennessee Valley Authority and USDA Forest Service, TN Restore habitat for native fish and mussel species in the southeastern U.S. by completing on-the- ground restoration projects in cooperation with ten federal agencies, state and local interests, and private organiza- tions. NFWF: $95,000; outside funds: $146,229. Horse Lick Creek @P.rnel~ K. M,clell~"d Bayou Bartholomew Restoration Bayou Bartholomew Alliance, AR Recruit and enroll private landowners to restore Bayou Bartholomew in Arkansas by planting vegetation filter strips and restoring riparian corridors along the bayou to improve water quality and wildlife habitat.
