<br /> <br />paying for the first complete review of <br />coral reefs in the Western Pacific to see <br />if the Western Pacific Regional Fishery <br />Management Council needs to imple- <br />ment a coral reef management plan. <br />In Palau, the project will yield a man- <br />agement plan for a marine protected <br />area, the first in Palau, the home of <br />some of the world's most important <br />coral reefs. Both NOAA and NFWF <br />plan to expand this new partnership <br />targeting imperiled coral reefs. <br />The projects described above <br />are just some of the highlights <br />from a record year for the Fisheries <br />Conservation and Management <br />Initiative. The 120 projects funded in <br />1997 range from the major programs <br /> <br />2~ 1997 Annuul Report <br /> <br />., <br /> <br />..,.,..,,~ ----- <br /> <br />~~. <br />. ."-~-q <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />..~ <br /> <br />... <br /> <br />discussed above to support for <br />the Whirling Disease <br />Foundation in their efforts to <br />combat a disease threatening <br />blue-ribbon trout fisheries <br />throughout the United States. <br />Like the Marshall Plan, which <br />confronted a European econo- <br />my nearly shut down by world <br />War II, the Fisheries Conservation and Management Initiative is <br />often asked to deal with situations that desperately require funds to <br />carry out the necessary work. But just as the hostilities of World War <br />II had to cease before the Marshall Plan could be effective, so must an <br />atmopshere of cooperation be created if we are to solve the crises of <br />natural resource conservation. NFWF is lucky enough to have federal <br />funds to bring to the table and only funds projects where partnerships <br />exist or can be created. The war is over, the rebuilding has com- <br />menced. <br />
