CONSERVATION EDOCATION INITIATIVE

prescriptive approaches, NFWF helps blunt the momentum of a
backlash against environmental education by allowing audiences to
think about conservation issues for themselves, countering the wise-
use argument that environmental education brainwashes students
to think only one way. Our goal is to reach as wide an audience as
possible, creating a public that is better informed to face the tough
conservation choices ahead.
To that end, the Foundation's 1997 grants supported a wide
range of activities, from helping veterinarians understand more about
wildlife conservation to encouraging children's authors to write about
conservation. Tufts University has used a NFWF grant to train veteri-
narians to better understand and participate in wildlife conservation efforts. The
Children's Writers Institute sponsored a conference that brought together prominent

~'

n 1997, NFWF's
Conservation Education
Initiative, which brings
conservation learning
to a wide array of tradi-
tional and nontradition-
al audiences, awarded
forty-one grants to thir-
ty-eight organizations.
Like George Marshall's
plan for rebuilding the
post-war economies of
Europe, the Conservation
Education Initiative
provides the tools-cost
sharing and technical
assistance-that allow groups
to create their own approach-
es and solutions to conserva-
tion issues.
Marshall's plan was
designed, in part, to blunt
the spread of Communism
beyond the Iron Curtain by
giving countries the support
they needed, while allowing
them to determine their
own futures. NFWF's locally
driven initiatives follow the same
approach. By avoiding didactic or

. . . the Conservation

[ducation Initiative

provides the tools-

cost -sharing

and technical

assistance-that

allow groups to

mate their own

approaches and

solutions to

conservation issues.

16 1997 Annual Report

These butterflies traveled (by mail) from u.s. schools to Mexico and back as part of the
Journey North environmental education program.

John Ratzloff
