Of the original 16 sites in the Upper Yampa drainage, two
potential reservoir sites appear to have the best potential to meet existing and potential future
demands. These include the following sites, retained for further study:

· Watson Creek #2
· Morrison Creek # 1

These sites are shown on Figure 5, Potential Sites in the Upper Yam:pa Ricer Study Area.

While the Morrison Creek sites do not provide water storage for local users, the Morrison Creek # 1
site should be retained. This site could serve as an excellent management tool for downstream water
users in the Yampa River basin.

In addition, the Coal Creek feeder canal should be evaluated further. It could potentially reduce
downstream administration on the Bear River and also mitigate problems that Coal Creek peak flow
causes to Coal Creek users.

3.3.2 Elk River

The Elk River drainage is located in Routt County and is tributary to the Yampa River approximately
9 miles west of Steamboat Springs. Figure 2 shows the drainage in relation to the overall basin. The
river drains the northern half of Water District 58. Significant streams include North Fork Elk River,
South Fork Elk River, Hinman Creek, Willow Creek, Deep Creek, Big Creek and Mad Creek, as
shown on Figure 3.

3.3.2.1 Potential Sites in the Elk River Drainage

Division 6 irrigation records indicate that Willow Creek upstream of Steamboat Lake, the mainstem
Elk River and the Deep Creek watershed all support significant irrigated acreages. Division 6 staff
indicated that irrigators in the Elk River drainage generally have sufficient water (K. Holt, personal
communication, 1999). One potential site on upper Willow Creek was identified from the
Hydrosphere study (1993). lbree potential sites in the Deep Creek watershed were identified during
the map reconnaissance. Table 6, Potential Small Reserwir Sites in the Elk Ricer Drainage, presents the five
sites identified and sununarizes the results of the detailed screening.

3.3.2.2 Elk River Drainage Sites Retained for Future Consideration

One Elk River drainage site was retained after detailed screening. The others were eliminated because
Deep Creek is the only watershed in the drainage that is consistently water short (A. Schaffner,
personal communication, 1999). The site warranting further examination is:

· Chimney Creek

The location of this potential small reservoir site is shown on Figure 6, Potential Sites in the Elk Riw
Study A rea.

M~ WatsonM~Oroup -P.O. &x 774018 -St:edIr1I:nztSprings, Colorado 80477 -(970) 879-6260

w,WP/01J1SnvIJ R-.D SMJy (Dw(r lip<.
