Stewart Lake outlet (RK 482), and 52 at the Old Charley Wash outlet (RK 401.5) and
the mouth of the Duchesne River (RK 399).

Riverine telemetry

Adult razorback sucker implanted with radio transmitters in 1993 showed spring
movement patterns similar to those observed from tagging data. Following implantation
at spawning areas in 1993, five of the seven fish established locations downstream of
the spawning area for at least two months (Figure 4). The maximum distance traveled
downstream during the 12 months following transmitter implantation in 1993-94 ranged
between 0.0 and 60.4 km, averaging 22.1 km (SD = 21.7 km) (Table 1). Maximum
upstream movement during the same period ranged between 0.0 and 32.2 km,
averaging 18.5 (SD 14.0 km). In May and June, at least three individuals were found in
the vicinity of Ashley Creek (RK 481). In late July, 1993, one adult razorback sucker
died approximately two months following implantation. By mid July, four of six surviving
razorback sucker, including the one implanted at the Yampa River spawning bar,
established positions within Split Mountain Canyon (RK 526-513). The remaining two
fish later moved into Split Mountain Canyon in September. The fish that was implanted
at the Yampa River spawning site moved back to that area in September, but returned
to Split Mountain Canyon (located there again in February, 1994). In 1994, two of the
six study fish moved to spawning sites other than where they were captured the
previous year. Fish 40.140 was collected on the Yampa River spawning bar in 1993,
but moved to the Escalante spawning area in 1994 (Appendix 1). The fish collected at
the Island Park site in 1993 also moved to the Escalante spawning area (RK 501) in
1994. Four of the six study fish were observed in the vicinity of the lower Island Park
site in 1994, being found between RK 526 and RK 531 during 20 April- 24 May. In
1994 fish 40.110 was found at the Island Park site, RK 531, on 13 May and was not
located at either of the other spawning areas during spring. With the exception of
40.110, all fish collected from the Escalante spawning area bar during 1993 returned to
this area in May, 1994.
Following spawning in 1994, four individuals moved downstream and two moved
upstream during the postspawning period. Maximum movement downstream during
the 12 month period ranged from 4.8 to 112.7 km, averaging 61.8 km (SD = 59.9 km).
Three fish made long downstream movements ranging from 93.3 to 112.7 km.
Maximum postspawning movement upstream during the second year ranged from 0.0
to 45.9 km. As in 1993, most fish returned to Split Mountain Canyon sometime during
the summer of 1994. By late September, all fish remained in Split Mountain Canyon
with the exception of one individual who moved to the upper reach of the Escalante
spawning area. In September, two fish returned to spawning sites where they were
originally collected in 1993 (Yampa River and Escalante spawning areas). Fish 40.140
and 40.059 returned sometime prior to March. In March, 1995 all fish were located
within a 19.3-km reach of the river between Island Park (RK 534) and the Escalante
spawning area (RK 492-501). Only one fish remained in Split Mountain Canyon in
March, although one fish was only 1.6 km upstream and another 3.2 km downstream of
the Canyon.

15
