<br /> <br /> <br />Initial development was centered at Wahweap where installa- <br />tion of facilities has barely been able to keep up with the increasing <br />number of visitors. A 40-unit motel and restaurant were constructed <br />III 1966, along with road improvement.s and a 60-site campground. <br /> <br />At Bullfrog Basin, western access to the lake, a campground, <br />picnic area, and boat-launching ramp have been installed. An <br />increase in visit.ation to Bullfrog and Halls Crossing, access point <br />from the east, is expected when the roads leading into t.hese areas <br />are completed. The State of Utah has received a Federal grant to <br />build a paved highway into Bullfrog Basin, and plans are underway <br />to begin work on the road immediately. <br /> <br />Rainbow Bridge National Monument <br /> <br /> <br />A floating marina has been installed in the Aztec Creek Arm of <br />Lake Powell on the route to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. <br />This spectacular natural rock bridge has increased in popularity <br />now that visitors can boat to within approximately one mile of it. <br />From 1909 t.o 1923, a period of 14 years, only 296 hardy individuals <br />visited Rainbow Bridge. 1955 was the first year that visitation <br />reached 1,000 annually. From 1909 to 1962 a total of 23,890 vaca- <br />tioners visited Rainbow Bridge, while in 1966 it is estimated that <br />visitation will be well over 20,000. By the end of September 1966 <br />17,991 visitors had already been recorded. <br /> <br />Visitor Center <br /> <br />The Glen Canyon Dam Visitor Center, being constructed by <br />the Bureau of Reclamation, will be operated jointly by the Bureau <br />of Reclamation and the National Park Service. This beautiful center <br />overlooks the dam, powerplant, and reservoir. Exhibits are being <br />prepared for the center, scheduled to be opened in 1967. A self- <br />guided tour through Glen Canyon Dam and powerplant will be <br />provided to the public from the new Visitor Center. <br /> <br />Fishing <br /> <br />The Arizona and Utah State Game and Fish Departments, <br />working together with the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, <br />have planted a total of 16,300,000 fish in Lake Powell. The species <br />that have been planted to date are Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, <br />Kamloop Trout, Kokanee Salmon, and Black Crappie. <br /> <br />2.
