Regulated Rivers

The water development inventory focuses on dams rather than

water diversions, since dams have a greater effect on the flow regime, and

the effects of diversions are difficult to quantify due to return flows and a

lack of gauge records. In some instances water diversion can have a major

impact during low flow periods, but dams affect primarily the moderate
and high flow events. This range of medium to high flows is especially
important to the morphology of the river since these flows usually carry
the majority of sediment on an annual basis (Wolman and Miller, ]960;

Andrews, 1980), and are an important form of disturbance to riparian
