I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

The fish in each dataset were identified by age group and related in tabular
form to a brief narrative describing the study objectives, methodologies,
collection sites, dates, and gear types. These narratives were provided to
all project participants prior to Workshop #1 to familiarize eve~one with the
nature of the database. The complete set of narratives and other project
documentation were provided to all project participants and are not included in
this report.

Results

A total of 99 studies was identified in FWSjDATABASE. A directory of
these is provided in Table 2. For each study identified in Table 2, the year,
collector, river, and sample type are presented. ' Study' is the name of the
dataset containing the rare fish information for that study. It generally
contains abbreviations of river, year, and the collector, respectively.
, Collector' generally identifies the principal investigator of the study.
'Sample type' identifies the different sample schemes represented by the data;
'variable' means that a number of sample schemes were used; 'I,E' represents
the intensive/extensive program of the FWS/CRFP, where the major rivers were
divided into longitudinal strata for randomized sampling of river miles within
each stratum; 'Y' and 'L' represent YOY and larval sampling, respectively,
during the indicated seasons; 's' means spring sampling; 'R' designates
radiotelemetry data taken from fish captured for implant or during tracking;
and '0' means diel sampling.

Each of these studies was documented in a study narrative, which describes
the study objectives, methodologies, collection sites, dates, and gear types.
These were provided to project participants in a package prior to Workshop #1.
As an example, the study narrative for the first study listed in Table 2
(GR64VAN) is provided in Appendix A.

SUMMARY TABLES

Methods

In addi tion to the study narratives, the data associated wi th the three
target species were drawn from the datafilesand assimilated into summa~
tables. Each table represented the data of a particular life stage of a
species wi thin a single river. The number of fish and associated depth,
velocity, substrate, water temperature, and habitat observations were presented
by river strata, or homogeneous longitudinal reaches of river, by month of the
year, and by gear type. The river strata were predetermined by FWS during CRFP
in 1979.

Results

A total of 108 summa~ tables were developed from the working database.
These summa~ tables were the principal tool used by the experts to develop the
data partitions during Workshop #1. These summary tables were also provided to
all project participants in the documentation notebook, and are not included in

5
