The reports of the Larval Fish Laboratory are included in Appendix C <br />of this report. It should be noted that any fish identified as a "juvenile" in <br />the LFL reports is defined as a postlarvae less than one year of age. However, <br />this BIOjWEST report identifies four classifications of fish as follows: (1) <br />larvae = fish without complete muscle and fin development and either a yolk or <br />yolk slit present; consistent with LFL, (2) young-of-the-year = YOY, postlarva <br />less than one calendar year of age, (3) juvenile = immature fish greater than <br />one year of age, and (4) adult = sexually mature fish. <br /> <br />Physical Measurements <br /> <br />Water depth and velocity were measured and substrate type described for all <br />seine hauls, and where possible, at the capture sites of endangered fish. A <br />photographic record of the typical and unique sample sites is included in <br />Appendix D of this report. <br /> <br />Measurements of Gila Specimens <br /> <br />Because of the morphological variation in the genus Gila found in the upper <br />Colorado River basin, each juvenile and adult chub captured was photographed on <br />a white background marked with a 1-cm grid pattern. Also, the following <br />meristics were measured using calipers, and counts were made on each chub <br />longer than 250 rom: (1) total length, (2) fork length, (3) weight, (4) <br />distance between insertion of pectoral and pelvic fin, (5) caudal peduncle <br />length, (6) head length, (7) length of dorsal fin base, (8) length of anal fin <br />base, (9) dorsal and anal fin ray counts. These measurements are recommended <br />by FWS in the ISMP. Additionally, the following meristics were recorded: (10) <br />nuchal depth, (11) minimum caudal peduncle depth, (12) maximum caudal peduncle <br />depth, (13) maximum body depth, and (14) snout length. <br /> <br />Data Collection and Storage <br /> <br />All data were collected in the field on data forms recommended by BOR from the <br />FWS's ISMP. The data were then stored in the database management system, dBASE <br />III+, to facilitate storage, access and analyses, as well as to provide data <br />compatible with the computer system and format used by BOR and FWS. <br /> <br />10 <br />
