3-8

Unfortunately, exact numbers of larval squawfish for August 1982 are not
available from agency reports.

Nevertheless, some effort by FWS to determine if spawning by the rare
fishes occurs within the reach is warranted. Radiotelemetry is a proven way
of helping to locate spawning sites, and seining for larval fishes in late
summer can help ,to confirm reproduction and assess the contribution of the
reach to the population. Establ ishment of a physical habitat cross-section
for PHABSIM (Physical Habitat Simulation Model) could add to the database
necessary to address habitat needs, but such a cross-section should not
automatically result in a designation of "essential reach" or "sensitive
area II.
