A short resume for Dr. Valdez is attached to this Scope of Work. He
will be the primary contact on this project and will be responsible for meeting all deadlines and
schedules. Dr. Valdez will coordinate assimilation of literature, svnthesize information, and will
personally conduct many- of the biologist interviews. Dr. Valdez will be principal author of the
preliminary. draft, and final reports.
Dr. Ronald J. Ryel is a population ecologist affiliated with Utah State University. A short
resume for Dr. Ryel is attached to this Scope of Work. He will assist Dr. Valdez in synthesizing
pertinent information and conducting biologist interviews. Dr. Ryel will serve as coauthor of the
preHminary. draft, and final reports.
Dr. Steven W. Carothers is an aquatic ecologist with nearly 30 years of experience in the
lower Colorado River Basin and Grand Canyon. Dr. Carothers will assist Dr. Valdez in contacting
and interviewing lower basin biologists and agency personnel, and in developing recovery goals for
the 100ver basin. Dr. Carothers has been instrumental in much of the development of the Lower
Colorado River Basin Multi-Species Conservation Program, and is very familiar with the issues
surrounding the MSCP.
Mr. Bryan Cowdell will be included in this project to assimilate reports and publications and
to help synthesize pertinent information. Mr. Cowdell has degrees in fisheries, computer science,
and engineering. He has worked with the fishes of the Colorado River Basin for over 15 years.
We will consult with Population Geneticists to assist us in evaluating genetics issues relative
to the role of genetics in detennining realistic recovery goals. We expect to contact several
geneticists for their opinion on the best way to derive numbers that protect genetic diversity. They
\vill also assist us in developing minimum effective population size and determining extinction
probabilities.

13
