The entire file occupies about 290 kilobytes of space. A basic understanding of
spreadsheet programs is helpful to run this model. To access the model:
1. Locate the program Excel 2002 or a comparable version.
2. Start Excel 2002 and open the file: "FLOODPLAIN-V5.1"
4.3.2 Navigating FLOODPLAIN
When you access FLOODPLAIN, you will see either a worksheet or a chart on the screen.
Look for the file tabs along the bottom of the screen to locate the first three worksheets (Model,
Drift, Sensitivity) and the seven charts (l-Length-Wt; 2-Fecundity . . .7-Growth). Point the
mouse to the worksheet "Model" and click once to open. The worksheet is entitled
"FLOODPLAIN V5.1, January 20,2004". The model consists of Parts A and B, and 31 steps.
with input or output variables. Locate each of the 31 steps to familiarize yourself with the input
and output variables. Note that you can change screen view to see all 31 steps of the model
simultaneously by clicking on "View", then on "Zoom" on the pull-down menu, and under
"Magnification", specify "60" under "Custom", or the percent appropriate for your computer

screen.

Each input variable cell (user-specified) is identified with a rope border and is
unprotected to allow the user to input a numeric or alphabetical entry. The remainder of the cells
in this and all the worksheets and charts are write-protected and do not allow the user to modify
any formulas or output cells.
Also included in the worksheet "Model" are three figures, which provide a graphic
representation of area of floodplains, number of fish surviving to recruitment, and recruitment
rate. This worksheet also contains a user guidance section to facilitate use of the model.
Now navigate through the other three worksheets and the seven charts by clicking once
on each tab along the bottom of the worksheet. The worksheet "Drift" is a sub-model that helps
the user determine the percentage of larvae drifting and entrained in floodplains for input into the
model. The floodplain model treats all floodplains as a single unit in computing necessary area
for recovery. The "Sensitivity" worksheet provides four scenarios and 17 tests of the input
variables in the model that provide insight into the most sensitive variables. This senSitivity
analysis is provided for the information of the user and is not used in running the model. The

14
