-:

mixing of the species.

2. In evaluating gear effectiveness, you may want to compare size of fish with gear characteristics
(e.g., trammel net mesh size). An effective way to do this is to measure body depths offish from
the sample and perform a frequency analysis to compare with gear mesh size. Another effective
analysis is Chi2; Le., compare actual with expected catches.

3. The observation is noteworthy that the highest numbers of Colorado squawfish in both gravel
pits was during spring runoff. These riverside features are important to this and other native
fishes.

4. The conclusions and recommendations from this work are excellent. These should be
examined closely by the Recovery Program and implemented. Such ideas as requiring 404
pennitees to structure gravel pits in a certain manner can be a valuable benefit to an otherwise
intrusive practice. This idea can take other forms; e.g., gravel pits can be structured with islands
and standing old-growth trees to provide perching areas for eagles.

Thank you for the opportunity to review the subject report. I appreciate your attention to
keeping me involved in the Recovery Program. I also commend you and your staff for being one
of the few "beneficiaries" of the Recovery Program that is producing viable and useful report and
publications. Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,

~A~~

"
