Dale Strickland
We have received the final report "Historical and Future Impacts of Vegetation Management and
Natural Disturbance on Water Yield from Forest Service Lands in the South Platte River Basin",
prepared by C.A. Troendle, J.M.Nankervis, and A. Peavy. An electronic version is provided as
an attachment to this letter. Once members of the Governance Committee have had a chance to
review this report, I propose that my staff ineet with you to review and discuss the analyses and
findings in the report. Polly Hays, Regional Water Program Manager, is the contact for these
discussions, and can be reached at 303-275-5096 or pehays@fs.fed.us. (Item #3 from 12/2/05
letter.)
4. Once a new executive director for the program is in place, we anticipate working with the
Governance Committee, the USGS, and the NRCS to ensure that the reference stream flow and
precipitation monitoring sites identified in Troendle et al, 2003, remain in operation. Please
contact Polly Hays of my staff when you are ready to proceed with these discussions. (Item #6
from 12/2/05 letter.)
5. Region 2 of the Forest Service provided active participation and support to the June 5-6, 2006
meeting of National Academy of Sciences panel investigating "The Hydrologic Impacts of Forest
Management", held in Fort Collins, CO. Other Forest Services offices and staff have been active
participants in the panel's subsequent meetings held in Las Vegas, NV and Portland, OR and
Atlanta, GA. (Item #7 from 12/2/05 letter.)
6. We are ready and available to work on an ongoing basis with the Water Management Committee
to determine what additional workshops, analysis, or research may be needed to inform these
issues. Please contact me or any of my staff regarding any issues you would like to discuss. (Item
#8 from 12/2/05 letter.)
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I look forward to working with all of
you to contribute to the successful implementation of the first increment of the Platte River Recovery
Program.
Sincerely,
/s/ Greg Griff th for
RICK D.
