Progress Report 2
Phase II- Whooping Crane Data Analysis
Reporting to:
Executive Directors Office, the Platte River Implementation Recovery Program
Reported by: '
Lisa Fotherby, Reclamation, Technical Service Center, Sedimentation and River Hydraulics
Group
Start Date: January 18, 2008
Project Completion Date: March 19, 2008 (40 working days after receipt of first payment)
Work Accomplished by February 15, 2008
It was decided during the previous period to construct a separate HECRAS model for each year
of whooping crane sitings. The computed variables for crane sitings in years 2001 to 2006 are
based on river transects surveyed up to that date, i.e. there will be no 2004 transect surveys
included in the analysis of 2002 Whooping crane sitings. Reclamation will provide a HECRAS
model and output for each year of crane observations.
Using the River mile designations developed from the GIS work in the previous period, the
whooping crane transects for year 2001 were processed. The processed transects were then
inserted into the HECRAS cross sections to complete the 2001 HECRAS model.
Work also began on processing the 2002 whooping crane transects and the 2002 processing is
approximately 30 percent complete. The 2001 and 2002 data constitutes approximately 50
percent of the Whooping crane transect data for 2001 through 2006.
Schedule and Deliverables
In the next period, the 2001 HECRAS model will be run to compute the requested data variables:
change in water surface elevation from transect survey day to whooping crane siting day, wetted
top width of transect channel on whooping crane siting day, and hydraulic depth (flow area of
main channel divided by wetted top width) of transect on day of whooping crane siting. 2001
data will be provided to Shay Howlin of WEST to review format of the output, as work
continues on successive years of data and successive models.
Action Items
Reclamation is to provide the Executive Directors office with a letter requesting the second
payment for this project, and the ED office will then authorize the Nebraska Foundation to
provide payment.
The third progress report on Phase II of the Whooping crane Data Analysis will address work
accomplished from February 19 to February 29, 2008.
Progress Report 2 1 Phase II Whooping Crane Data Analysis
