Review of Geomorphic Monitoring and Research Program/Protocols
Currently there are 3 monitoring protocols that are related to the geomorphic program. They
were written in (2003?):
1. Monitoring the channel geomorphology of the Central Platte River valley
2. Monitoring the vegetation of the central Platte River Valley (includes monitoring
vegetation in the valley, which is not related to the geomorphic program, and in-channel
vegetation, which is related)
3. Protocol for Aerial Photography in the Central Platte River Valley
As part of the IMRP, there were also 4 geomorphic research protocols/activities identified at the
same time, but these protocols have not yet been written:
4. Evaluate sediment erosion, transport, and deposition processes
5. Evaluate in-channel vegetation dynamics
6. Comprehensive geomorphic assessment from Lexington to Chapman, Nebraska
7. Investigation of river restoration activities
Since 2003 the final EIS was written, an adaptive management plan was developed, and specific
program hypothesis have been identified.
Suggested Actions
• re-organize geomorphic protocols as shown below
• update geomorphic monitoring protocol, veg protocol and aerial
photography protocol, and
• write or outline the missing geomorphic research protocols to reflect
program hypothesis (draft outline on next pages).
1. Geomorphic Monitoring Protocol- provides overall system monitoring of channel change and data
for research and management.
Revise existing protocol (see attached file)
Pull In-channel seedling monitoring from Vegetation monitoring protocol, update/revise, and add it here.
2. Flow and Yegetation Research and Management Protocol- addresses program flow hypothesis
Write general protocol/outline of tasks
3. Sediment Research and Management Protocol- addresses program sediment hypothesis
Write general protocol/outline of tasks
4. River Plan Form Research and Management Protocol- addresses plan form and mechanical
program hypothesis
Write general protocol/outline of tasks
5. Protocol for Aerial Photography and Airborne Terrestrial LiDAR in the eentral Platte River
Valley- provides data and mapping for research and management.
Review aerial photography protocol and add airborne terrestrial LiDAR
Page 1 of 3 Draft July 2, 2007
