i,
River Hydraulics and Sediment Transport
Issue: In comparison to the Present Condition, how would the action alternatives affect channel
geomorphology, and in turn, affect habitat for the target species in the Central Platte
River Channel?
Overview
474
? CCOPE
The affected area is the mainstem of the Platte River in Nebraska, beginning at the
confluence of the North Platte River and the South Platte River, river mile (RM) 310 (table
4-1 in chapter 4), at North Platte, Nebraska, and ending downstream at RM 160, near
Chapman, Nebraska. The primary area of habitat management is the Central Platte Habitat
Area beginning at RM 244, near Lexington, Nebraska, and ending downstream at RM 160,
near Chapman, Nebraska.
_11UNDICATORS
The amount and size of sediment carried by the river, the volume and occurrence of
riverflows, and the growth of vegetation greatly influence the evolving shape of the channel.
The creation and maintenance of habitat is a reflection of channel shape. Impacts on the
geomorphology of the channel environment were assessed using the following indicators:
• Mean Annual Flow and the 1.5-Year Flow
• Sand Transport, Deposition, and Erosion
• Grain Size
• Sandbar-Building Potential
• Width of Total Water in the Channel
