Ill.d. Cross Section Surveys
I would propose adding annual cross section surveys on the downstream of the bridges at the sediment
transport sites to the task list. Using a survey-grade GPS RTK system, the cross section data could prove
useful over the course of the monitoring effort. Cross section data reduction, analysis and graphing
would be similar to the other cross section surveys.
IV. Photography
IV.a. Ground Photography
Ground photography will be used to document and describe bank condition, vegetation type and
structure, and location at each end point of a transect (or transect segment) survey. Photographs will
also be used to document conditions at bank, bed and bar sampling sites, as well as the in-channel
vegetation sites. Metadata will be embedded with each individual image to identify specific location,
date, time, azimuth, lens, and any other pertinent comments that add value to the image or
interpretation.
IV.b. LiDar
LiDAR image data will be used to extend cross section surveys beyond the accretion zone measured with
the survey-grade GPS RTK System. I think this is a reasonable approach. I assume the company doing the '
LiDAR work will just provide us with a DEM file which can then be used to easily extend the surveyed
cross sections.
IV.c. Aerial Photography
I assume aerial photographs will be made available to us even though the various components for
evaluating of the aerial photography will be addressed under a separate contract.
V. Data Reduction and Statistical Analysis
Raw data will be reduced with appropriate pfots and general statistical parameters summarized (e.g.
particle size distributions from the grain analysis). As the emphasis for this effort is on monitoring trends
and not tests of hypotheses, most of the statistical analyses are rudimentary and can be performed in
MS Excel. However, should more robust analysis be required I am wetl versed in many parametric and
non-parametric techniques, least squares regression analysis (linear and nonlinear), analysis of variance,
and many others. For these types of analyses I use SAS almost exclusively, though I have other packages
as well (e.g. Systat and R).
V. Deliverables
Per the RFP, annual monitoring deliverables will inctude, but are not limited to:
Draft and final annual monitoring plans and budget.
Products as identified in the Scope of Work above, including raw data sheets, maps, UTM
locations of monitoring sites, and photographs of monitoring implementation, data collection,
and other related activities.
Draft report in Microsoft Word format from each monitoring season will be submitted to the ED
Office and TAC for review and comment each monitoring year.
PRRIP - Geomorphic Monitoring 7 of 20 Blue Mountain Consultants
