EXPERIENCE (continued)
Snake River habitat improvement river assessment. Vatentine, Nebraska. 2004
Snake River habitat improvement river assessment, Addendum. Valentine, Nebraska. 2005
Snake River habitat improvement - implementation 2005 - present
Geomorphic, hydrologic, and biological assessments were performed on 0.6 mile stretch of the Snake
River for a private landowner, Dr. J. Patrick Stout, MD. Of particular interest was the impact of the
operational hydrology of Merritt Reservoir on seasonal discharges, sediment inputs and transport, bed
and bank stability, riparian vegetation, and water temperature and how these factors influenced the
wild trout fishery in the 14 miles of river below Merritt Reservoir dam to its confluence with the
Niobrara River. The purpose of these assessments were to evaluate the current condition of the river
reach and the adjacent uplands, provide recommendations for potential improvements, and provide an
objective analysis of the operational hydrology of Merritt Dam on discharge/summer stream
temperature relationships downstream of the dam and on how that influences the fishery. Both
documents were submitted by the landowner to the US Bureau of Reclamation for the Ainsworth
Irrigation District Draft Environmental Assessment evaluating potential title transfer of the dam.
Eventually, the title transfer was denied and the operational hydrology of the dam was changed to
include recreation/fishery flows in the Snake River and minimum pool volumes in Merritt Reservoir. I
continue to work with Dr. Stout implementing the recommendations made in the documents for
improving instream, riparian, and upland habitat.
2004 Assessment/Document:
Primary Contractor: Williams & Associates, LLC.
Sub-Contractor: Blue Mountain Consultants
2005 AssessmendDocument and all subsequent work:
Blue Mountain Consultants
Contact:
Dr. J.
