TO: Platte River Water Advisory Committee
FROM: Don Anderson, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
DATE: 3 July 2007
RE: Comments on Nebraska's `Estimated Stream Depletion in the
Nebraska Platte River Basin due to new irrigated Land Developed
After July 1,1997' report of December 5, 2006
The methodology used to develop these estimates looks reasonable to me, within the
range of uncertainty and given the caveats articulated in this report.
For purposes of PRRIP review I think it would be helpful for Nebraska to more
succinctly summarize some of the relevant results presented in this report. For example, I
found it helpful to create these summary tables:
Estimates of net new groundwater-irrigated land and wells, 1997-2005:
NRD 1997-2005 net GW acres 1997-2005 new wells
North Platte + 15,300 323
South Platte + 16,700 118
Twin Platte + 53,500 477
Central Platte + 74,500 1,032
Tri-Basin + 33,200 616
Estimated average annual depletions to the Platte River over the 1998-2038 period:
River Reach Est. avg annual depletion,
1998 through 2038
WY state line to Kin sle Dam 8,200 AF/ ear
Kin sle Dam to Tri-Count Su I Canal diversion 10,500 AF/ ear
Tri-Count Su I Canal diversion to Lexin ton 11,050 AF/ ear
Lexin ton to U.S. Hi hwa 183 Elm Creek 2,100 AF/ ear
U.S. Hi hwa 183 to Cha man 2,000 AF/ ear
Cha man to Columbus 4,875 AF/ ear
TOTAL: WY state line to Columbus 39,000 AF/ ear
Estimated average annual depletions to the Platte River over the 1998-2038 period if the
only areas considered are the "Hydrologically-Connected Area for the Overappropriated
Basin" (above Hwy 183) and the 10%-depletion-in-50-years area (downstream of Hwy
183):
River Reach Est. avg annual depletion,
1998 through 2038
WY state line to Kin sle Dam 8,125 AF/ ear
Kin sle Dam to Tri-Count Su I Canal diversion 8,750 AF/ ear
7ri-Count Su I Canal diversion to Lexin ton 9,300 AF/ ear
Lexin ton to U.S. Hi hwa 183 Elm Creek 1,425 AF/ ear
U.S. Hi hwa 183 to Cha man 625 AF/ ear
Cha man to Columbus Not evaluated
TOTAL: WY state line to Cha man 28,250 AFI ear
