Feasibility Evaluation of the Arkansas Valley Pipeline
Water Works! Committee
June 2003
The future feasibility of this alternative for lower Arkansas River basin municipalities and
W&S districts will depend on future CDPHE requirements for disposal of RO reject.
Evaporation and Landfill Disposal
Calculations to determine an opinion of probable cost for this alternative indicate this
alternative is not feasible because of the cost of the very large concrete-lined drying beds that
would be required.
Deep Well Injection
Preliminary calculations for opinions of probable-cost for deep well injection disposal of RO
reject from municipalities and W&S districts in the lower Arkansas valley indicate a cost of
$1 to $2 per thousand gallons for deep well injection. These calculations are very
preliminary and a much more extensive feasibility investigation would need to be completed
before determining the utilization of this alternative for RO reject disposal in the lower
Arkansas River basin.
Use RO Reject as Industrial or Mining Water Supply
This would require locating an industry in the lower Arkansas River basin that would be
willing to accept the RO reject for use as a water supply. The feasibility of locating such an
industry is not known.
Vapor Compression and Crystallization
The industrial evaporation process was reportedly considered for application to RO reject in
the Phoenix area but rejected on the basis of cost.
Land Disposal and Irrigation
This alternative would require irrigating salt tolerant species of crops. The best information
Brown & Caldwell has been able to obtain concerning the concentration of Las Animas' RO
reject is that the average concentration is approximately 6,000 mg/1 of mainly totally
dissolved solids (TDS). In Brown & Caldwell's experience, there are no crops that could be
grown in the lower Arkansas River basin with an irrigation water supply containing 6,000
mg/1 of TDS.
39
GEI Consultants, I11C. 01284 03-06-30 Feasibility Evaluation Final
