Feasibility of the Rehabilitation
of the
Deuel and 5nyder Improvement Company
Rivcr Sand Gat~ Structure
Project Sponsor
The Deuel and Snyder Improvement Company (DSIC) is a Colorado
mutual ditch company and a non-profit corporation.
DSIC was formed in the late 1800's to construct and operate the
Deuel and Snyder Canal for the benefit of the shareholders. The
DSIC currently has 15 shareholders with 161 total shares of
company ownership. The 161 shares are broken into two different
categorie5 based upon the two different types of water rights
owned by the DSIC. The smallest division of company ownership is
the 21 shares associated with the company's Meadow Rights. The
DSIC has two Meadow Rights which allow them to divert up to 21
cubic feet per second from the South Platte River but only from
April 10`h through July 10`h of any given year. The remaining 140
shares are associated with the Company's conventional irrigation
rights whieh allow them to divert up to 63 cubic feet per second
from the South Platte River, at a headgate located about a 1 mile
northwest of Fort Morgan, Colorado.
Based on the State Engineer's diversion records from 1950 through
2007, DSIC has had an average annual diversion of 4,590 acre feet
for all water diverted into the Deuel and Snyder Canal or
approximately 28.5 acre feet per share. The State Engineer's
diversion records are found in Appendix A.
Project Service Area
The service area is located in Morgan County, from about 1 mile
north of Fort Morgan to about 6 miles northeast of Fort Morgan on
the north side of the South Platte River. Deuel and Snyder water
is used to irrigate approximately 1,650 acres. The water is
typically used to irrigate corn, alfalfa, beans, and sugar beets.
A map showing the irrigated lands of the DSIC is found in
Appendix B.
Feasibility S[udy
Deuel & Snyder Improvement Company
River Sand Gate Structure
February 2009
1
