BIG BATTLEMENT DAM AND RESERVOIR <br />PLAN DESCRIPTION <br />Big Battlement Reservoir (aka Battlement #2) is an existing <br />reservoir located in the Dirty George Creek drainage of the <br />Gunnison River basin about 12 miles north of the Town of Cedaredge. <br />The reservoir is in the Grand Mesa National Forest. Figure 1 is a <br />location map showing the reservoir within in Colorado and relative <br />to the Town of Cedaredge. Figure 2 is a copy of a USGS Quad map <br />showing the reservoir site. <br />The dam and reservoir are owned by the City of Delta. Box 19 <br />Delta, Colorado 81416 <br />Ron Alexander, Public Works Director 874-7566 <br />The dam was constructed in the early part of the century with a <br />height of about 24 feet. A restriction is imposed on the dam <br />because of sink holes on the embankment which indicate piping of <br />embankment materials. The restriction is at gage height.8 feet <br />which leaves about one third of the reservoir capacity. The <br />seepage and piping problem appears to be controlled at the <br />restricted water level but a further restriction may be imposed if <br />corrective measures are not initiated in the next few years or the <br />restricted water level is not adequately controlled. <br />Due to the number and extent of the sink holes, a plan which has a <br />reasonable chance of controlling the embankment and foundation <br />seepage cannot be identified. Reconstruction of the dam is <br />believed to be the best option to utilize the reservoir. <br />The major construction problem is that the reservoir is located in <br />the Grand Mesa National Forest and the local Forest office will not <br />allow improvement to the access road for construction equipment and <br />materials. The present road is extremely rough and almost <br />inaccessible. No outside materials, such as sand for a toe drain <br />or concrete, can be hauled to the dam. <br />Big Battlement Reservoir is adjacent to Granby #12 Reservoir, which <br />is owned by the Granby Ditch and Reservoir Company, see Figures 1 <br />and 2. Granby #12 Dam and Reservoir, as explained in the report <br />for that dam, is also in need of repairs. Due to the access <br />difficulty, this report is predicated on the construction work at <br />both reservoirs being performed jointly. One engineer and one <br />contractor are assumed to perform the work at both sites, and any <br />other repairs that may be needed at other dams in the area. <br />Big Battlement Dam 1 <br />
