Name of the study or project: Rio Grande Reservoir Multi-Use Enlargement Study <br />2. What is the purpose of this grant application' <br />To fund the study of a) the physical and. legal feasibility of enlarging Rio Grande Reservoir; <br />and, b) the potential uses of an enlarged Reservoir to address multi-use needs in the Rio <br />Grande River Basin including management and administration of the State's Compact entitled <br />waters and potential solutions to water supply and distribution problems in the Basin. <br />3. General location of the study or demonstration project. (Please include county, and <br />approximate distance and direction from the nearest town): <br />Rio Grande Reservoir is located in Hinsdale County, Colorado, approximately 30 miles <br />southwest of Creeds, Colorado. The Reservoir is located on the headwaters of the mainstem <br />ofthe Rio Grande River and. has a present storage capacity of approximately 54,000 acre-feet <br />nearly all of which is stored for irrigation purposes. Water stored in Rio Grande Reservoir <br />can be delivered via the Rio Grande mainstem for use in Hinsdale, Mtneral, Alamosa, Rio <br />Grandy and Saguache Counties. <br />~ 4. Please provide a brief narrative description of the proposed study or demonstration <br />project including purpose, need, and service area. (Attach scope of study, if available) <br />Introduction: <br />Rio Grande Reservoir is situated on the headwaters of the Rio Grande River £avorabty iocat~l <br />to deliver water throughout the Rio Grande River Basin. downstream to the border with New <br />Mexico. The Reservoir's present storage capacity is approximately 54,000 acre-feet with the <br />vast majority of that capacity being utilized by the San Luis Valley Imigation District, the <br />owner and operator of the Reservoir, for the storage of water for delivery to irrigated lands <br />within the District's service area. around Center, Colorado. The Reservoir also is utilized for <br />the storage of small amounts of Compact water (water which maybe needed in a water year <br />for delivery by Colorado to New Mexico under the terms of the Rio Grande Compact), <br />transmountain water for augmentation of domestic and commercial development along the <br />Rio Grande pursuant to the San Luis Valley Water Conservancy District's augmi~ntation <br />program, transmouritain water for use by the Colorado Division of Wildlif+~ to meet <br />recreational demands, and of direct flow storage water for irrigation, under decrees issued in <br />Case Nos. W-3979, W-3980 and 95CW18, I3istrict Court, Water Division No. 3. The <br />Reservoir does not have an established conservation pool but the District maintains a pool <br />pursuant to a storage agreement with the Division of Wildlife. <br />
