the failed azeas. It is our understanding that this alternative is more favorable to the ditch owners since they
have pipe readily available. It should be noted that this alternative has a couple of drawbacks and these
drawbacks should be considered before they begin installation of the pipe. The fast drawback is that it is
imperative that the seepage be stopped for this alternative to be effective, therefore it may take a
considerable amount of pipe to adequately stop the seeps. We would recommend that initially, the pipe be
installed both upstream and downstream of the failed area. We would recommend that the pipe extend
upstream at least 100 feet above the failed azea and the pipe should also extend downstream at least 100
feet past the natural drainage that crosses under the ditch. The other drawback is the maintenance of the
pipe if it becomes clogged or silts in. It may be very difficult and expensive to clean out this length of pipe
if it becomes clogged, fails or silts in.
• The above conclusions and recommendations are based on our cursory field observations and without any
subsurface information other than our observations of the failed scarp faces and the existing cut slopes
constructed along the ditch. We strongly recommend that an engineer from this office observe the cut
slopes after the existing fill materials aze removed. In addition, we recommend that an engineer from this
office observe and document the construction of any repair alternatives.
If you have any questions regarding this report, our observations, conclusions or recommendations, or if we
may be of further servic please contact this office. As noted previously in this report, we strongly
recommend that the exisl~~ fiii materials that are located above the failed area be removed as soon as
possible to prevent i
the failed area.
_~
S
Brian D.
