COLORADO RIVER WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT
ELKHEAD RESERVOIR EXPANSION
Proiect Description
The Colorado River Water Conservation District is located in Glenwood Springs and is comprised
of all or part of 15 counties that are in the northern half of the Colorado River drainage basin. The District
conserves, uses, safeguards, and develops water resources of the Colorado River and its tributaries to which
the State is entitled to under the Colorado River Compact. This project was a collaborative effort between
the River District and the Upper Colorado Recovery Program to enlarge Elkhead Reservoir by raising the
existing dam 24-feet, for the purpose of obtaining an additional 12,000 acre-feet of storage to support
endangered fish species downstream (5,000 acre-feet) and for municipal, industrial, and agricultural use
(7,000 acre-feet). The project also included construction of a new labyrinth spillway, outlet tower,
environmental mitigation areas, and a State Park campground site.
Proiect Data
Sponsor: Colorado River Water Conserv.
