Feasibility of the Rehabilitation <br />of the <br />Weldon Valley Ditch Company <br />Cottonwood Draw Flume <br />Project Sponsor <br />The Weldon Valley Ditch Company (WVDC) is a Colorado mutual ditch <br />company and a non-profit corporation. <br />WVDC was formed in the late 1800's to construct and operate the <br />Weldon Valley Ditch for the benefit of the shareholders. The WVDC <br />currently has 65 shareholders with 640 shares of stock. The <br />Company can divert 165 cubic feet of water per second of time <br />from the South Platte River, at a headgate located about 3 miles <br />west of Orchard, Colorado. <br />Based on the State Engineer's diversion records from 1950 through <br />2007, WVDC has had an average annual diversion of 36,000 acre <br />feet for all water diverted into the Weldon Valley Ditch or <br />approximately 56,25 acre feet per share. The State Engineer's <br />diversion records are found in Appendix A. <br />Project Service Area <br />The service area is located in Morgan County, from about 2 miles <br />west of Orchard to about 3 miles east of Weldona on the north <br />side of the South Platte River. Weldon Valley water is used to <br />irrigate approximately 6,400 acres. The water is typically used <br />to irrigate corn, alfalfa, beans, and sugar beets.
