Water From Colorado's Bark Beetle Forests -Scope of I?o?k
Elder, Rhoades, Hubbard and Lee; USFS Rocl?y Mountain Research Station; 5/15/08
Technical Publications - We will prepare USFS General Technical Reports: 1) to
provide a simple metric for measuring ground surface roughness, snow depth and SWE
and 2) to report on the seedling regeneration and site productivity response to
management treatments.
Student Training -The project will provide students hands-on experience in field and
laboratory activities. As affiliate faculty at Colorado State University, the RMRS and
CSFS staff will mentor students in the scientific method, data collection and analysis, and
scientific communication and will work with students to carry out individual research
projects.
Demonstration Areas -Study areas located on the Colorado State Forest land will be
instrumented and maintained as long-term installations to monitor changes in snow
accumulation, soil moisture, water quality, soil productivity and seedling stocking and
growth. These plots will also serve as demonstration areas for field tours and will have
immediate value to land managers directing specific operations inbeetle-killed forests.
II. Personnel
Kelly Elder is a Research Hydrologist with the US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain
Research Station in Fort Collins, Colorado and manages the Fraser Experimental Forest,
in Fraser, Colorado. His research focuses on forest hydrology in the subalpine zone
where snow and trees are the primary players in water distribution and delivery.
Chuck Rhoades is a USFS watershed researcher who studies the interactions between
soil and water nutrients and chemistry in Colorado's high elevation watersheds. His
work evaluates how natural disturbances and forest practices influence the sustained
delivery of clean water and the productivity of forests.
Rob Hubbard is a USFS Research Ecologist who studies the roles forests play in
ecosystem water and carbon cycling. His research focuses on how forest productivity
and water use respond to disturbance, management and climate change.
Brook Lee is Assistant District Forester for the Steamboat District of the Colorado State
Forest Service. He is responsible for forest management and outreach activities on the
Colorado State Forest.
Other Personnel:
A full time technician, seasonal employees and students will be contracted and utilized to
assist in field work and project execution.
III.
