i~~
STATE OF COLORADO
Bill Ritter, Jr., Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
Thomas E. Remington, Director
6060 Broadway
Denver, Colorado 80216
Telephone: (303) 297-1192
wildlife. state. co. us
TO: Colorado Water Conservation Board
FROM: Thomas E. Remington, Director
Colorado Division of Wildlife
DATE: 16 September 2008
SUBJ: Director's Report; CWCB Meeting, September lfi-17, 2008
Alamosa, Colorado
G01~ ~\
b ,,
y
s~o~ OF ~tiq
For Wildlife-
ForPeople
The following is a summary of current water resource issues and wildlife management issues sorted by CDOW
Region and Section:
IBCC BASIN ROUNDTABLE PROCESS
DOW Regional personnel continue to participate in the IBCC Basin Roundtable processes in their designated role
as agency liaisons. The major issues that Division personnel continue to assist the BRT are:
• CDOW is assisting each of the BRTs at this stage of the process because we are very interested in making
sure that water users and potential water development projects have the benefit of the most up-to-date
information on biological resources that may be impacted (positively or negatively) by water
development.
• The challenge of developing amulti-basin strategy on how to meet the urban need and still protect
recreational environmental and agricultural users with minimal dislocation.
• Al] of the BRTs are in the process of completing, their respective non-consumptive water needs
assessments. This activity was a requirement of the IBCC's foundation legislation, HB 1177. Most
BRTs are very interested in information that the I)OW has regarding sport fisheries, recreational
resources, native species, and species of special concern. CDOW staff has worked with the IBCC's team
of consultants to provide the requested information.
• CDOW sees the BRT process as a real opportunity to avoid future conflicts and to proactively manage
species in an up-front manner with the water community.
• We believe that our efforts have been well received by the BRTs and the interested publics.
WATER PROJECT REVIEW
DOW Staff is currently involved with reviewing and providing comments on several projects statewide. These
include the following:
• Chatfield Reallocation - a proposal to dedicate additional 20,600 AF in Chatfield Reservoir for
municipal and agricultural use. DOW is working with partners to ensure proper and adequate mitigation
for fishery and the Chatfield Fish Planting Base.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Harris D. Sherman, Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, Robert Bray, Chair • Brad Coors, Vice Chair • Tim Glenn, Secretary
Members, Dennis Buechler • Jeffrey Crawford • Dorothea Farris • Roy McAnally .Richard Ray • Robert Streeter
Ex Officio Members, Hams Sherman and John Stulp
