flannelmouth sucker, bluehead sucker, and roundtail chub. The BLM, CDOW and others have
signed amulti-state conservation agreement designed to protect habitat for these species, with
the goal of preventing listing of these species under the Endangered Species Act.
At this Board meeting, the CWCB will hear recommendations from the Southwestern Colorado
Water Conservation District on the potential use and/or disposition of the Uravan Water Rights,
and will hear comments and concerns from Montrose County and other interested persons and
entities.
Because the earliest that Umetco expects to complete remediation of the mill site and obtain
governmental approval of the remediation is late 2009, the Uravan Water Trust may not convey
the Uravan Water Rights to the CWCB until sometime in 2010. Consequently, the Board need
not make any decisions at this time on the use or disposition of the Uravan Water Rights. Staff
will continue to work with the Southwestern Colorado Water Conservation District, Montrose
County, San Miguel County, the Towns of Norwood, Nucla and Naturita, and other interested
persons and entities to develop a mutually acceptable approach to addressing the concerns that
have been raised about future water development and to preserve the natural environment of the
San Miguel River to a reasonable degree.
4
