Lower San Miguel yVa~er Resource Planning Study
Page 19
VILF Combination of alte~natives-
This alternative looks at utilizing some combination of the above described alternatives to
arrive at a balanced alternative that results in a benefit to stream flow protection in the lower
basin and acknowledges and addresses existing and future needs of the local governmental
entities while minimizing the impact to water administration in the basin.
Johnson Ditch Water Rights
Wells
Factors Considered
• The Tabeguache Wells No. 1 and No. 2 along with the Uravan Well No.
2 would be conveyed to Montrose County. This would provide the
county with a source of water at or near the lands they will be acquiring
from Umetco. The county and local interests are planning on building a
recreation and education facility in this location. It would include ball
fields, rustic camping, and a mining interpretive center, which would
highlight the history of Uravan and the surrounding area.
• The Mineral Camp Well, the Uravan Well No. 1 and the Eula Belle
Mine Well water rights should be relinquished to the stream. These
wells are not in use and no longer are in existence; they have relative
junior priority dates and are for relatively small amounts of water. The
history of use of these wells is also uncertain. Their relative value for
instream or industrial or domestic use is very limited. Therefore, it is
recommended that they be relinquished to the stream.
(~'nnrl»cinnc
These alternatives are considered to be the preferred alternatives for the
use of the wells.
Surface Water Rights
Factors Considered
• The Johnson Ditch surface water rights are pre-1922 water rights and,
therefore, not subj ect to a "Compact Call".
• Due to a limited history of use, the Johnson Ditch water rights may be
limited to 3-4 cfs and an annual consumptive use of approximately 500
acre feet.
• There may be an opportunity for the local governments to "loan or
lease" the water for instream flow through H.B.1280.
r'nnrl»cinnc
The use of the Johnson Ditch water rights by the local governments to
meet drought and some future development needs coupled with the possibility of
meeting some instream flow needs through a long term loan or lease of the
~Iuly 2008
