Lower San Miguel yVa~er Resource Planning Study
Page 16
VILC Domestic, Municipal and Industrial Use
This alternative looks at the CWCB conveying all the Uravan Water Rights to local
governmental entities.
Johnson Ditch Water Rights
Wells
Factors Considered
• The Tabeguache Wells No. 1 and No. 2 are located approximately 1.5
miles upstream of the confluence of Tabeguache Creek and the San
Miguel River. The Ball Field/Interpretive Area is located immediately
downstream of the confluence. The wells are connected to a pipeline that
has one terminus at the eastern end of the Ball Field property and the
other end terminates near the Uravan Well No. 2. The Uravan Well No.
2 is north of Highway 141 on the west end of the "F Block" property that
is to be conveyed to Montrose County. Since Montrose County will hold
ownership to the "F Block" and the "G Block" lands, conveying the
adjacent wells to Montrose County for its use would seem appropriate.
• Since the Tabeguache Wells No. 1 and No. 2 are decreed for municipal
and industrial use and the Uravan Well No. 2 is decreed for domestic
use, a change of water right may not be necessary.
• The Tabeguache Wells and associated pipeline are still intact and the
powerlines still run to the wells; however, the transformers have been
removed, the wells have been capped, and the pumps have been pulled.
The expense to put the wells back into production should be minimal.
• The Uravan Well No. 2 is still in operation and in good shape.
• Poorly documented history of use may make any change of water right
difficult. However, a change of water right may not be necessary for
some uses.
• The Mineral Camp well, the Uravan Well No. 1 and The Eula Belle
Mine Well, also have a poor history of use. This combined with their
remote location and the fact they no longer exist on the ground make
their utility for local governmental use improbable.
(rnnrl»cinnc
The Tabeguache Wells No. 1 and No. 2 and the Uravan Well No. 2 all
appear to be appropriate for conveyance to Montrose County. The wells are on or
adjacent to Umetco property that is scheduled to be conveyed to the county.
Depending on the type of use contemplated by the county a change of water rights
may not be necessary. The Mineral Camp Well, the Uravan Well No. 2 and the
Eula Belle Mine Well have apparently been destroyed in the remediation process
and no longer exist. Further pursuit of these well does not seem warranted.
~Iuly 2008
