Interbasin Compact Committee Basin Roundtables
Rio Grande Interbasin Roundtable
MINUTES
June 10, 2008 5:00 - 8:00 P.M.
Student Center, Adams State College
Attending: Ronald Peterson, Judy Peterson, Ron Brink, Mike Willett, Ray Wright, J.B.
Alexander, Jack Gilleland, Jimmy Dunn, Nathan Coombs, Connie Pleasant, Lee
Bagwell, Mike Gibson, Cindy Medina, Allen Brown, Nicole Langley, Fidel Sandoval,
Peter Friederick, Rocky White, Sam Vance, Steve Russell, Judy Lopez, Rio de la Vista,
Mike Sullivan, Charles Stillings, Steve A. Sanchez, Fred Bauder, John Tonko, Mel Getz,
Charles Spielman, Laurelin Kruse, Erin Minks, Steve Vandiver, Leon Moyer, Ed Torres,
Art Hutchinson, Perry Cabot, Eric Hecox
Introductions: Chairman Mike Gibson welcomed many guests from the public; took roll
call to establish quorum; established quorum; glad to see Eric Hecox attending. Mike
noted Ruth Heidi was away, with Valley Courier represented by Laurelin Kruse now a
full time reporter for the Courier. Erin Minks in attendance from Congressman John
Salazar's office.
Approval of Minutes from May 13, 2008: Correction on item #7, should read "Perry
Cabot" and "Jeff Trannel". Correction noted. Cindy Medina moved approval as
corrected. Lawrence Gallegos seconded motion. The motion carried unanimously.
Reappointment of Members: Mike: We still need to get a member from Costilla
County. He has contacted the commissioners. The Acequia society meets on same day
as the Roundtable, so it's a time conflict for members of that group. Suggested
adverting the position. A question on Saguache County rep Steve Sanchez: Clearing up
question of possible conflict of interest with the US Forest Service. Maybe someone
from the new railroad might represent industry, as they have some water issues, getting
water for the RR to La Vega. Maybe Ted Smith from Trinidad Aquaculture program ?
Mike G. said he would follow-up on these issues.
Rio Grande Compact Report: Mike Sullivan, District Engineer, CDWR, gave ten day
report almost in layman's language for benefit of many guests attending. Gave ten day
snapshot through end of May of stream flows of six stations we use, with rivers running
above average. Explained how Rio Grande Compact works, and his constant juggling
act to make sure Colorado does not over - nor under-deliver. Cold snaps dropped the
river, so flood worries seem to be over for this year. Weather has not been helpful for
the crops, delaying growth but on the positive side has kept the rivers in check and
prevented flooding this year. Mike's report is available on request.
