Discussion Material for the Evaluation of Strategies
MSI Conservation
Policv Issues for Discussion - Water conservation is an important component of Colorado's
water supply portfolio for meeting future MKI demands. Although there is general agreement
that conservation is an important part of meeting our future water supply needs, there is need
for more in-depth discussion on:
¦ The ability` to implement various water conservation measures;
¦ The sharing and potential uses of conserved water; and
¦ The interplay- between conservation and the timing and development of new water supply
projects.
Technical approach
¦ Confmrnm the identified potential savings fronm Various water conservation measures or best
management practices (BMPs) developed by the Water Conservation Technical Roundtable.
¦ Evaluate if recent, post-drought water demand reductions are permanent or it reflection of
the drought shadotiv and recent economic conditions.
¦ Use a Simplified Water Allocation Model to test the impacts of implementing permanent
conservation measures and reallocation of conserved water on supply reliability.
¦ Based on the analysis of impacts of conservation on supply reliability, identify- the
opportunities and challenges for the use of conserved water as a source of future water
supply (identifz" storage and conveyance needs, institutional challenges, etc.). Evaluate how
much of our future M&I water needs can be met by implementing different water
conservation measures
Action Item
At their August 2008 meeting, the IBCC had an in-depth discussion on MKI conserv
This discussion will be summarized to guide further evaluation of this strategy.
