The SB179 funds of $250,000.00 represent a 50% contribution toward the $500,000.00
cost of the three-phase project. The ability to use other funding sources to match SB 179
funds presents an unprecedented opportunity to complete the restoration or rehabilitation
of Platoro.
The subject of this request for funding, The Platoro Reservoir Restoration Project, is an
important component in the Rio Grande Basin's objective of achieving water sustainability
in the Basin. If these structural problems are not corrected very soon they may threaten
the future operational efficiency of Platoro Reservoir and seriously diminish Colorado's
ability to meet its Compact obligations. In addition, Platoro is a high-risk facility with many
campgrounds and summer homes downstream in Conejos Canyon. Should the valves
covered by Phase III of this Project fail, there may be no control of the river flows and the
reservoir storage could be lost, causing a large economic and environmental impact to all
downstream communities.
Acceptance of this proposal by the R.G.R.T. was immediate and unanimous, particularly
because members recognize this Project as addressing urgent issues affecting the
operation of this extremely important reservoir.
On behalf of the R.G.R.T. Members, we appreciate the Board's consideration of this
request and urge your support to the fullest extent possible. By this letter, I am forwarding
the application and supporting materials for the subject project. If you require additional
information, please notify me accordingly.
Sincerely,
Mike Gibson
Chair, Rio Grande Inter-Basin Roundtable
Enclosures (1)
cc: Conejos Water Conservancy District
