Alternative
• Programs that encourage alternatives to buy and dry where appropriate.
• Develop coal bed methane water as a resource.
• Employ technology solutions for municipal water supply for lower quality water
sources.
• Agriculture, municipal, environment, and recreation all need to invest.
• More effective use and reuse of water.
• Change culture with respect to water use.
• Technological solutions for agriculture with polymer in soil.
• Building codes to address landscaping.
• Buy turf like Las Vegas - bluegrass has seen its day.
• Not going to have quality of life and standard of living without societal changes.
• Pay more for food, clothing, water.
• Politicians need to be more realistic; cannot save agriculture, have water for the
environment, municipal, and energy demand. This is about making choices. We
must have a way to talk about trade-offs. Can we be sustainable within our
resource base?
• Need to have dialogue about our compact entitlement. We should start having
discussions about further development of Colorado River Water now.
- We can talk within a range of supply availability.
- We should talk about who assumes what risk under different development
scenarios.
- Need to look at risks to the West Slope.
- Need to look at risks to West Slope agriculture.
• Providers may not care about people. Citizens of the Front Range care more about
the West Slope than the Front Range water providers do.
• Sit down today and say we are in a range of 250,000-750,000 acre-feet to develop.
Need to talk about the concept of compact development not about Yampa,
Colorado, Gunnison pumpbacks.
• Recognize the contribution the West Slope provides to Front Range activities and
economy. It is the playground of the Front Range and the Metro area is the jumping
off place for visitors to our State.
• May need to put a statement up on the board "This is the last generation with
enough resources." It is our turn to figure out the next 50 years. It takes a while to
realize we are at risk.
7
I:\INTERBASIN COMPACT COMMITTEEWISIONS FOR COLORADO WATER SUPPLY FUTURE\RESPONSES TO VISIONING AND MARCH MEETING\IBCC REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS.DOC
