Statewide/Education Committee
Rita Crumpton
Status Quo
• Growth will happen.
• Governor Ritter wants to see alternative energy development here so growth will
increase.
• Cannot use water to limit growth.
• Already working on how to get rid of buy and dry in Arkansas Basin.
Alternative
• Need to tie land use planning to water resources, County Commissioners need to
talk about land use planning and zoning.
• Private property rights must be maintained.
• First step is more storage, this would allow us to keep more water in streams and
keep agriculture viable.
• Agriculture is the economic foundation for this state.
• Federal government needs to be involved in this discussion, re-operation of
reservoirs. Reservoirs need to be operated for water supply.
• CWCB has done some nice work with instream flows, do not want to see that get
out of hand.
• Get basin County Commissioners and brainstorm what they could do if they tied
land use planning to water supply.
• IBCC should focus on specific issues and projects. Should seek input from
Roundtables. May want to consider putting a workplan together, to examine
statewide issues.
• Would like to take this out to the public to get meaningful input on visionary
process.
16
I:\INTERBASIN COMPACT COMMITTEEWISIONS FOR COLORADO WATER SUPPLY FUTURE\RESPONSES TO VISIONING AND MARCH MEETING\IBCC REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS.DOC
