DTU is
excited about the prospect of Greenway getting involved in aquatic habitat on the Platte. As you may
know in 2007 we embarked on a long term goal of improving the aquatic and riparian environment on the
Platte in the metro area. We believe that there are resources and a willingness to do major restoration
work on the river to make it a recreational asset for the City of Denver.
We are not suffering under any illusions that a solution will be quick or easy. Stakeholders along the
Platte are too numerous to mention. During the past year our work has been focused on raising
awareness and talking with potential partners and interest groups. This year our goal is to get a toehold
in the restoration process and establish DTU as a viable contributor to a long term project on the river.
We are facing a major issue on the upper reaches of the river in that winter releases from Chatfield can
be essentially zero. This is a major obstacle to maintaining healthy fish populations. I was glad to hear
your pitch for non-consumptive flows to benefit recreation. No one can afford to buy water rights to create
instream flows on a long term basis. A contingent of willing donors seems the only way to provide the
necessary water. Hopefully the Roundtable group can see the benefit of maintaining a healthy river.
We have a proposal from Ecological Resource Consultants, Inc. to do a preliminary study to enhance the
ecological function and maximize recreational use in the 5 miles below C-470. Our Board of Directors
has not approved the proposal, but I expect it to be adopted this month. We have also asked ERC to give
us some data on the reduced evaporation and absorption rates that may be a fringe benefit to
downstream users from the work.
DTU is happy to stand beside or behind Greenway to achieve our shared interest in the Platte. Please let
me know if there is anything I can do to support your July presentation to the Roundtable group.
Best regards,
Mike Hobbs
President
Denver Chapter Trout Unlimited
303.484.8417
