Water Supply Reserve Account -Grant Application Form
Form Revised May 2007
7. Please provide a brief narrative of any related or relevant previous studies.
In 1985 Urban Drainage and Flood Control District commissioned the following two reports:
Major Drainageway Planning South Platte River, Chatfield Dam to Baseline Road, Urban Drainage and
Flood Control District Phase B -Volume I, Preliminary Engineering Design
Volume I (Preliminary Engineering Design) presented a road map for the corridor development for 20 years
(tluough 2005) within a forty mile study reach, focusing on flood control and drainage. A brief overview of
recreation and wildlife is also presented in this report
Major Drainageway Planning South Platte River, Chatfield Dam to Baseline Road, Urban Drainage and
Flood Control District Phase B -Volume II, Recreation Plan.
Volume II (Recreation Plan) presented a plan for recreational and ecological development and restoration
within the same forty mile study reach.
In 2000, former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb's South Platte River Commission prepared the South Platte
River Corridor Long Range Management Framework. One of the guiding principles of this plan is quoted
below:
"In managing the South Platte River Corridor, Denver should strive to balance and integrate social
and natural functions and values of the River. The river should be managed to sustain a variety of
uses, including recreation, community events, and education, and to restore it in support of increased
species diversity and a continuous wildlife habitat corridor, with enhancing water quality, public
safety and flood mitigation as overriding priorities"
The Framework plan maps a path forward towards the long term protection and enhancement of the South
Platte River.
10
