Water Supply Reserve Account - Grant Application Form
Form Revised May 2007
Temporarily- clear streambed of obstructions and debris ni anticipation of future Nvork.
Clear gravel away from the diversion structures.
Stabilize streambanlcs and improve the condition of the riverbed sufficient Iv to
minimize channel movement until Phase 11 begins.
Increase the depth-to-ividth ratio of the channel in anticipation of high flows this spring
and iii preparation for channel stabilization of Phase 11 and construction in Phase III.
o Phase II - Install J-Hook Structures - The expectation is that gravel transport down the
main channel Null be improved to reduce the gravel bed load in front of the Core and the
Diversion Gates during high flows. Flows into the North Branch channel Nvill be increased
and stabilized, especially during loNv flow regimes on the main channel. Water quality AN-x11
be improved by reducing sediment loading, stabilizing the stream-bank and reconfiguring the
stream channel to enhance sediment transport.
¦ Stabilize streambanlcs and reconfigure stream channel.
¦ Shape channel to increase the depth-to-width ratio.
¦ Stabilize stream banks and improve the condition of the channel of the Conejos by
installing J-Hook vane structures as specified by NRCS
¦ Obtain stability on both the streambanlc and on adjacent riparian areas.
o Phase III - Construct-in-place Core & Diversion Gates - The expectation is to replace
both the existing sluiceNvay gate structure and the existing dam structure Nvith a new
Diversion Gate system and a new Core. The intention is that by replacing both of these
structures the following will be accomplished:
• Achieve fiill diversion of decreed priorities during low flow regimes, «ith a design
flow of 1200 cubic feet per second in the Conejos River diversion and 530 cfs in
the turnouts to the North Branch Conejos River
• Replace the existing gates with a new Diversion Gate system so as to improve
operational control of flows in the North Branch during loNv flow regimes and
reduce sediment loading, woody debris, and log jams in high water flows.
• Replace the existing dam structure with new Core so as to increase flows in the
main channel of the Conejos, thus maintaining instream flows and water quality in
loNv flows and reducing sediment loading, woody debris and log jams in high
Nvater conditions,
¦ Direct gravel transport down the main channel and away from the diversion
structures, thus decreasing maintenance, improving channel capacity, and
improving water quality
¦ Revegetation of riparian areas will stabilize and rehabilitate streambanlcs and
enhance riparian habitat areas by improving water quality, resulting in an
improved fishery in the area of this diversion and protecting fisheries and related
recreational resources downstream.
¦ Future function of the floodplain on this reach of the river will be greatly
improved by achieving stability on both streambanlcs and on adjacent riparian
areas.
23
