e,
T
,

e)

.

DRAFT'SOUTH PLAITE RIVER TRIBUTARIES HYDROLOGY REPORT

FOUR MILE CREEK. HORSE CREEK. WEST CREEK, AND TROUT CREEK

2.3 Routing

The USGS used the Muskingum routing method in their modeling for the all of the South
Platte River Tributaries. Because observed hydrograph or field data were not available
for calibration of routing parameters, values of Muskingum K (represents the travel time
of the flood wave through the routing reach) and the Muskingum X (a dimensionless
weighting factor that describes storage effects of a channel) were selected within the
range of commonly used values for channels in steep upland watersheds (USGS, 2004).

Muskingum K and X values, shown b(~low from USGS study, were also used in the HEC-
HMS model for this study.

. Muskingum K = 0.6
. Muskingum X = 0.4

Figure 2 illustrates the HEC-HMS routing elements.

Page 10
