Feasibility of the Rehabilitation
of the
Bijou Irrigation Company Diversion Structure

Project Sponsor

The Bijou Irrigation Company (Bijou) is a Colorado mutual ditch
company and a non-profit corporation.

Bijou was formed in late 1800's to construct and operate the
Bijou Irrigation Canal for the benefit of the shareholders. Bijou
currently has 107 shareholders with 4000 shares of stock. The
Company can divert 450 cubic feet of water per second of time
from the South Platte River, at a headgate located about 10 miles
East of Kersey, Colorado. Bijou also receives water from Empire
Reservoir which is owned and operated by the Bijou Irrigation
District. The District owns two thirds of all Company shares.
Water from Empire Reservoir is delivered directly into the Bijou
Canal.

Based on the State Engineer's diversion records from 1950 through
2006, Bijou has had an average annual diversion of 47,460 acre
feet for all water diverted into the Bijou Canal. The State
Engineer's diversion records are found in Appendix A.

Project Service Area

The service area is located primarily in Weld and Morgan County,
from about 25 miles Northwest of Fort Morgan to about 5 miles
South of Fort Morgan on the south side of the South Platte River.
Bijou water is used to irrigate approximately 24,000 acres. The
water is typically used to irrigate corn, alfalfa, beans, and
sugar beets. A map showing the reservoir and the general company
boundaries is found in Appendix B.

Feasibility Study
Bijou Irrigation Company
Diversion Structure
June 2007

1
