COLORADO
WATER SUPPLY CONDITIONS UPDATE
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE STATE ENGINEER: COLORADO DIVISION OF WATER RESOURCES July 2008
ROOM 818, 1313 SHERMAN ST., DENVER, CO 80203
303-866-3581; www.water.state.co.us
The Surface Water Supply Index (SWSI) developed by this office and the U.S.D.A. Natural Resources
Conservation Service is used as an indicator of mountain-based water supply conditions in the major river basins of the
state. It is based on stream flow, reservoir storage, and precipitation for the summer period (May through October).
During the summer period, stream flow is the primary component in all basins except the South Platte basin where
reservoir storage is given the most weight.
The statewide SWSI values for the month range from a high value of 2.1 in the YampalWhite Basin to a low value
of 0.9 in the South Platte Basin. Three of the basins (YampalWhite, Rio Grande, Arkansas) experienced a gain from the
previous month's values. Three of the basins (Gunnison, Colorado, South Platte) experienced a loss from the previous
month's values. One of the basins (San JuanlDolores) remained unchanged from the previous month's values.
The following SWSI values were computed for each of the seven major basins for July 1, 2008, and reflect the
conditions during the month of June 2008.
Basin
South Platte
Arkansas
Rio Grande
Gunnison
Colorado
Yampa/White
San JuanlDolores
July 1, 2008 Change From Change From
SWSI Value Previous Month Previous Year
+0.9 - 0.1 -1.5
+1.8 +0.5 - 0.5
+1.6 +0.8 +0.1
+1.8 - 0.6 +1.1
+2.0 - 0.3 +2.0
+2.1 +0.9 +3.8
+1.6 +0.0 +0.3
Scale
-4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
Severe Moderate Near Normal Above Normal Abundant
Drought Drought Supply Supply Supply
