CQLQR~IDO AG WATER ALLIANCC,
April 9, 2008
Rick Brown
Colorado Water Conservation Board
1313 Sherman St•
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mr•. Brown:
The signatories to this letter wish to convey support. for municipal water development
projects that minimize the need to permanently remove irrigation water from agricultural
use. Further, they support the general proposal and Letter of Intent submitted by Mr. Don
Ament to the CWCB on March 31, 2008 for grant funding consideration.
The Colorado Ag Water Alliance is an informal group of agricultural organizations and
individual farmers and ranchers working together to create awareness of the importance
of irrigated agriculture in Colorado. The Alliance also seeks to educate landowners
regarding Colorado's water rights system and their rights and obligations thereunder.
The Colorado Ag Water Alliance supports a grant proposal that would. develop a template
for constructing lease arrangements among in-r•igation entities and communities in need of
obtaining access to water to assure adequate supplies during drought or to otherwise
prepare for future needs. Therefore, we support the seeps and intent of the project
proposal submitted by Mr•. Ament, and encourage your consideration to reserve
appropriate grant funding for the project.
We believe that municipalities that choose to explore alternatives to the traditional "buy
and dry" of irrigated agriculhrral lands do a greater service to their water customers by
not only providing dependable water supplies but also working to maintain the
agricultural heritage and economic diversity that make Colorado unique.
To date, the following members of the Colorado Ag Water Alliance offer (heir
enthusiastic support:
Colorado Cattleman's Association Rocky Mountain Farmers Union
Colorado Corn Growers Association Colorado State Grange
Colorado Farn1 Bureau Colorado Livestock Association
Colorado State University GreenCO

Mark Sponsler
Executive Facilitator
Colorado Ag Water Alliance
