placed into electronic databases that can be imported into the State's DSS database HydroBase.
The existing data will be evaluated and mapped to help identify data gaps and assist in the design
of the Phase 1 field data collection program (Task 33). Data obtained from Phase 1 field data
collection program will be added to the databases and maps. The databases and maps are
expected to be used in future years to update the existing groundwater model of the Denver Basin
Region (Task 47), and to support and expand modeling of the Lower South Platte Region
(Task 48).
All deliverables will be consistent with the DSS design, including use of data structures and
formats that are being developed by the Database DSS team (e.g. all maps will be provided in
ArcView format). Deliverables will use DSS standards for standard memo formats, report
formats, database design and program documentation, etc.
• Tasks 31 and 42: Collection, Analysis and Mapping of Aquifer
Configuration Data
Objective:
The objective of these tasks is to (1) compile existing aquifer configuration information and
create HydroBase-compatible databases with data from the Denver Basin and Lower South Platte
Regions, (2) help identify additional data needs in these Regions, (3) support the design of the
groundwater field program described in Task 33, and (4) enhance HydroBase with aquifer
configuration data collected during the Phase 1 field activities in Tasks 35 and 36.
Approach:
Task 31 Collect Historic Aquifer Configuration Data
• Obtain existing electronic databases that are currently maintained by the State and, if
available, the USGS and the available paper-copy reports (as identified in Appendix B7 of
the SPDSS Feasibility Study) that contain information on (a) aquifer bottom and top
elevations, (b) aquifer sand thickness and (c) aquitard layer elevations, thicknesses and
extents.
Task 42.1 Analyze and Map Historic Aquifer Configuration Data
Coordinate with the Relational and Spatial System Integration Consultant to determine the
database structure that will be used for entry and/or formatting of these historic data.
Reformat the existing electronic databases into the appropriate DSS (HydroBase) formats
Evaluate whether the non-electronic historic data is suitable for addition to the SPDSS
database. These data will be evaluated to determine if it may provide an enhanced
understanding of the Denver Basin and Lower South Platte Regions' ground water
systems. Data that are necessary for future use to configure, calibrate and use in the
groundwater models that are a part of the SPDSS will be converted to an electronic format
and added to HydroBase.
• Summarize the database for descriptive purposes, including the database fields, number of
entries in each field by aquifer, and sources of data.
• Prepare digital contour maps of (a) aquifer bottom and top elevations, (b) aquifer sand
thickness of each aquifer layer, including the location of data used in the contouring.
SPDSS Groundwater SOW, Phase 1 Page 2
