53.3 A step-by-step procedure memorandum in appropriate detail to document the results and
duplicate the climate data filling effort. This technical memorandum is expected to be an
appendix in the final Historic Crop Consumptive Use Report. Filled climate data will be
formatted in standard StateMod time-series format for use in StateCU.
53.4 A technical memorandum will be developed that includes a table and a 24 x 36 inch
ArcView map(s) showing the spatial assignments of climate stations to geographic areas.
This technical memorandum is expected to be an appendix in the final Historic Crop
Consumptive Use Report.
Task 54 -Collect, digitize, and summarize agricultural statistics, develop potential crop
groups for GIS Land Classification
Background:
Colorado Agricultural Statistics (CAS) report user-provided acreage and yield by crop on an
annual basis. Federal Agricultural Statistics Surveys report acreage and yield by crop every five-
years. Both Colorado and Federal statistics are available for each County in Colorado from prior
to 1950 to the present. Over 30 crop types are grown in the SPDSS study area. The GIS
contractor will use satellite imagery to estimate irrigated acreage and crop types based on an
infra-red signature that can be associated with various crop types. Crop types can be grouped in
a geographic area based on similar infra-red signatures, irrigation water requirements, and
growing seasons.
Objective:
Collect and digitize agricultural statistics data to use in historical irrigated lands assessment.
Develop recommendations for crop type categories to be used in each county by the GIS
contractor in developing the 2000 irrigated acreage coverage and historic coverages.
Approach:
54.1 Collect and digitize State and Federal annual acreage and crop type data published for
counties in the South Platte and North Platte basins from 1950 to 2002.
54.2 Use the agricultural statistics to characterize the changes in irrigated acreage and crop
types, by county, in the basins. Develop recommendations for crop type categories to be
used in each county by the GIS contractor in developing the 2000 irrigated acreage
coverage and historic coverages. It is anticipated that crops can be combined that have
similar growing seasons and water requirements, similar to the "small grains" category in
RGDSS. General information from the Colorado Irrigation Guide will be considered as a
source for estimating local crop growing seasons.
Deliverables:
54.1 Acreage and crop type data in the requested digitized format to the HydroBase data
manager for storage plus a memorandum describing the data source, contact name, and
data formatting requirements.
SPDSS Consumptive Use and Water Budget Component IZ
