DSS Component Assessment
• News and User Feedback
A method for obtaining user feedback and long-term RGDSS support (long-term funding to keep up-
to-date information in the system) should also be developed.
4.1.8.2 System Requirements
All documentation should be developed in both Microsoft Word and in HTML for public distribution.
4.1.8.3 Specific RGDSS Issues
The CRDSS documentation would provide a strong model for RGDSS documentation development.
4.1.9 DSS Integration -Systems Integration Tools
4.1.9.1 Time Series Utilities
Analysis tools developed as part of the CRDSS tstool application that performs time series analysis
and manipulation would be equally useful in the RGDSS. The functionality of tstool was
implemented primarily to support the planning models, though the design readily allows future
enhancements. Tttool can read time series from HydroBase or from StateMod files. It can read
multiple time series and then plot them, manipulate them (fill, sum, etc.), and export them to a
StateMod format file.
Other time series analysis capability developed within CRDSS should be extensible to other RGDSS
components or tools. An example of CRDSS data analysis capability allows for irregularly sampled
data to be used in analysis. This capability will be necessary to analyze some well data in the RGDSS.
4.1.9.2 Visualization Tools
Visualization capability ranging from simple plotting to product-oriented displays are required in the
RGDSS. GIS interfaces allow for display and analysis of spatial coverages. Visualization tools
supported by public domain software that allow users to view, manipulate, and print displays are very
important to a successful RGDSS.
4.1.9.3 Data Management Interfaces
DMls are computer programs that allow the use of specific models such as StateMod with a generic
database. The DMIs retrieve data from the database, format the data for a particular use, and may also
support data manipulation. DMIs are a central part of the data-centered approach mentioned earlier.
There are several advantages to this approach. Data can be stored in a logical and efficient manner
that improves the performance of the database access and makes the database maintenance easier.
Also, the data-centered approach makes it easier to add or replace a system analysis or modeling
component by simply writing a new DMI or by modifying an existing one. Finally, the use of DMIs
makes the creation of model input easier and less prone to error, and it makes duplication of results
easier. The CRDSS system contains the following DMIs:
• demandts -This DMI processes demand time series, estimates system efficiencies, and
formats crop distribution pattern data for StateMod.
• makenet -This DMI prepares a line diagram of the model network and the network files
for SateMod.
a454/report/final/comp. doc 07/2&~OS Y-O
