4.0 DSS COMPONENT ASSESSMENT
The objective of the component assessment is to identify decision support system (DSS) components
that could meet the needs identified during this feasibility study. Existing Colorado River Decision
Support System (CROSS) components that could be applicable to the Rio Grande Decision Support
System (RGDSS) were reviewed and are described in this section along with additional components
required for the RGDSS. The needs assessment identified nine categories of needs that the RGDSS
must address. The components that could address these needs as part of RGDSS are summarized in
Table 4-1.
TABLE 4-1
Component Requirements
Needs Cate or DSS Pro'ect Com onentl
Additional Data Collection New Data Collection
Surface Water Issues Water Resources Planning
Consumptive Use Modeling
Data Extension and Stochastic Data Development
DSS Inte ration
Water Rights Administration Water Rights Administration
DSS lute ration
Interstate Compact Issues Big River Model Simulation
DSS Inte ration
Ground Water Issues Ground Water Simulation
Consumptive Use Modeling
New Data Collection
DSS Inte rationZ
Streamflow Forecasting Streamflow Forecasting
DSS Inte ration
Water Budget Water Budget Analysis
DSS lute ration
DSS Design DSS Integration
Documentation DSS Inte ration3
iDSS project components are the probable tasks that will be accomplished when the system is built. DSS
components refer to the pieces of a DSS that will perform a particular set of analyses.
DSS integration includes those system functions that make the system useable and able to handle and display
large databases. Included in DSS integration are the relational database management system, the spatial data.
system, system graphical user interfaces, and documentation.
3Each modeling component will have required documentation that will be included in the system
documentation.
4.1 CROSS Components Relevant to the RGDSS
4.1.1Background
The existing CROSS system contains several components that would be useful to Rio Grande water
users as well and could be easily applied as part of the RGDSS. High-end servers running an
INFORMIX database could be used to support data and high-end workstations could be used to run
analysis and planning models. Recent efforts on the CROSS have allowed the system to be
configured and maintained on personal computers.
