Needs Assessment
Tables 2-1 and 2-2 contain a DSS Integration component that has not been previously defined.
The DSS Integration component is the part of the overall proposed project that ties the individual
components and data together using the following features:
• Relational Database Management System -The relational database management system
(RDBMS) manages and organizes the tabular data in the DSS. The RDBMS is a software
system that also has utilities to efficiently access and sort data.
• Spatial Data Management System -The spatial data management system, or GIS, manages
and organizes the map-based data associated with the DSS. The GIS is a software system that
can efficiently manage and manipulate these data. Also, the GIS contains utilities to print
maps.
• System Graphical User Interfaces -The system graphical user interfaces (GUIs) allow users
to efficiently navigate within the DSS and use the system.
• Documentation -System documentation provides a mechanism for feedback early in the
development process, facilitates communication between all users and developers of the
RGDSS, provides the support infrastructure for maintenance and future development of the
system, and provides training materials.
Chapter 3.0, Data Assessment, is an inventory of the readily-available data that could be used in
the DSS. These data are necessary to run or support the type of components that would be
needed for the type of analysis described. Chapter 4.0, DSS Component Assessment, describes
components that are available to be included in the DSS system.
a454/report/final/needs. doc 07/2&~OS 2-
