Water Supply Reserve Account -Grant Application Form
Form Revised May 2007
mechanism under which the project will operate, and DU who will provide biological and engineering
technical assistance, surveying, permitting and design, construction management and outreach to other
project partners.
The project entails the construction of a 2-acre wetland impoundment that will recharge the alluvial aquifer
of the SPR, which runs a couple miles distant from the project site. Water delivered from the Farmers
Independent Ditch Company will flow into the impoundment created by the application of low-level contour
levees placed across the property to optimize water depths for wetland recharge and waterfowl foraging.
The credits produced by these retimed flows will be credited to the CCWCD's Plan for Augmentation.
CCWCD and the WCSD will enter into an agreement to cover any of WCSD's diversions such that school
grounds may continue to be irrigated.
All parties to the partnership are interested in utilizing this project as a model project for further
development of wetland recharge projects associated with the SPR. DU plans to utilize this project as the
platform for amulti-million dollar expansion of wetland recharge projects into the middle stretches of the
South Platte River in Colorado. Our hope is that this project will demonstrate the effectiveness of
partnerships in achieving both water and wetland habitat conservation, will induce neighboring farmers,
municipalities and other water users to enter into similar projects and, finally, assist DU in cultivating grant
dollars from agencies and foundations unfamiliar with the complexities of securing water for wetland
development in Colorado's water-short basins.
Also, the project site is situated to provide an excellent venue for conservation education and outreach. We
will target two main audiences with our outreach efforts related to this project. First, we will focus on water
users and policymakers. This project will demonstrate the effectiveness, broad appeal, and multiple
benefits of wetland recharge projects to those in need of alternative solutions to water supply needs and to
the decision makers whose actions greatly influence the availability of those solutions. Second, we will
target the students of the school district to provide them with an in depth education about water supply
strategies in the 21~ century and wildlife habitat conservation in Colorado. In this sense, this project serves
not only the immediate needs of the School District, but it also serves the larger community, the SPR basin,
and the State of Colorado by creating an informed constituency.
4.
